Fossil hunting at Stevns Klint

This is a family-friendly tour where we explore dramatic cliffs, search for ancient fossils, and see the famous fish clay. The tour lasts about three hours and takes place at two sites along Stevns Klint. You’ll need a car — or I can arrange transportation for you.

Dino extinction

Discover the asteroid impact that changed life on Earth forever — told in a way that sparks curiosity for both kids and grown-ups.

Fish clay

See the famous fish clay — the thin, dark layer that shows the exact moment the dinosaurs disappeared.

Finding fossils

Hunt for fossils hidden in the chalk — a real treasure quest kids (and adults) love.

Højerup church

Experience the cliff-top church where graves once slipped into the sea — a real-life Halloween tale kids never forget.

A family adventure through deep time

Step into a world where cliffs tell stories, rocks hold secrets, and the past is suddenly right in front of you. This family-friendly tour brings you face to face with the asteroid impact that caused the fifth mass extinction — the moment dinosaurs vanished and a new chapter of life began.

The fifth mass extinction

You’ll hear the dramatic tale of the asteroid that changed everything, told in a way that sparks curiosity for both kids and grown-ups.

Højerup Old Church

We visit the cliff-top church that stood a little too close to the edge; in 1928, part of it — and several graves — slid into the sea. It’s a real-life, slightly spooky story that children always remember.

Fossil hunting on the beach

Down on the beach, we search for fossils from creatures that lived 66 million years ago. Tiny coccoliths are guaranteed, and lucky families might spot shark teeth or crocodile remains.

The famous fish clay

At head height in the cliff, the thin, dark fish clay layer reveals the exact moment of the meteor impact. Here, you can stand right beside the boundary between two worlds — before and after the dinosaurs.

The tour becomes a mix of adventure, curiosity, and kid-friendly geology, with stories and discoveries that stay with your family long after.

“Enthusiastic and time-generous angled at 6 year old dinosaur enthusiast - "fish clay". Also good information as to local "head height" views of the fish clay layer which we found after a walk over the stones. Good comms and efficient booking process. Excellent stuff.”

Are fossil hunting allowed at Stevns Klint and can we bring the fossils home?

Yes — you can collect small fossils in designated areas of Stevns Klint, and I will guide you so we protect the World Heritage Site while exploring it.

There are a few simple rules to follow:

  • Never chip into the cliff itself, only into fallen blocks
  • Never disturb the protected fish clay layer
  • At Højerup, tools are not allowed — you may only pick up what lies loose on the beach.

I explain what you may collect, how to do it responsibly, and I help you identify your finds along the way.

What should we wear and bring?

Wear comfortable walking shoes and clothes suitable for the Danish weather (it can change quickly).
Bring water, sunscreen and sun glasses in summer and an extra layer in cooler months.

I provide tools and safety glasses for the fossil hunting.

Will the tour be completed regardless of the weather?

The tours are completed even when it is raining. Put on sensible clothes and shoes.

However, trips are canceled when it can be very uncomfortable or dangerous to complete, for example with weather forecasts that report cloudbursts, heavy all-day rain or heavy thunderstorms.

It is Klintetours that assesses whether the trip can be completed in relation to the weather.

If the trip is canceled due to the weather, this will be notified to you as soon as possible and you will get your money back.

What about illness?

Klintetours is a one-woman company, and if the guide Anne Rosell Holt is ill on the day, the trip will be canceled as there are no substitute guides.

What if we have to cancel?

In case of cancellation less than 14 days before the trip: The entire price of the trip is paid with the exception of any meals that have not yet been purchased or that can be canceled.

In case of cancellation more than 15 days before the trip: The price of the trip is refunded with the exception of DKr 300 in processing fees.
