Stevns Klint UNESCO World Heritage tour

This tour is a short, easy walk were we explore dramatic cliffs, ancient fossils, and the fish clay. Stevns Klint is where the fifth mass extinction becomes visible to the human eye. This nature experience is great for both families and groups.

Scenic tour

Stevns Klint offers a stunning, dramatic coastline with breathtaking views. Great outdoor activity only an hour from Copenhagen

Dino extinction

Stevns Klint is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Denmark because it preserves the evidence of Earth’s fifth mass extinction.

Fish clay

See the K-Pg boundary that marks the moment of the asteroid impact.

Højerup Church

The church partly fell into the sea in 1928 and is now an atmospheric cliff-edge chapel. Many weddings take place here.

Where Earth’s most life-changing story is written in the cliff

You step into deep time on this tour.
At Stevns Klint, the chalk, limestone and the rare fish clay layer unfold the story of the asteroid impact that reshaped life on Earth — before, during, and long after the moment it struck.

Your guide brings the layers to life, connecting geology, biodiversity and the World Heritage landscape around you.
Many guests leave with a richer understanding of why Stevns Klint is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and with a quiet sense of belonging to the ancient story written in the cliff.

Højerup Church

We also visits Højerup Old Church. In 1928, part of the medieval church slid into the sea when the cliff beneath it gave way, revealing how alive this coastline truly is. Today the church stands restored and atmospheric, a place many couples choose for their wedding. From the balcony, the view over the chalk cliffs and open horizon is stunning.

Duration

This tour typically last 1,5 - 2,5 hours

Distance

The tour can be anywhere from 0.5 km to 2 km, depending on how far you prefer or are able to walk.

Difficulty

Easy walk that is suitable even for disabled people.
If you want to visit the beach below the cliff, you’ll need to go down and up a steep staircase and be able to walk on very uneven terrain.

As a non-expert, it's hard for me to understand what I'm seeing at geological sites, and it's even harder for me to help my children understand. Anne was brilliant at bridging this gap at Stevns Klint. She had photographs and maps about the geological history, and she pointed out exactly what we were seeing. She engaged our children and did a good job meeting them at their level. Stevns Klint was a highlight of our trip in large part due to Anne.

FAQ

Can we customise our tour?

Yes.
All tours are private, and I design the experience around your interests — geology, hiking, photography, food, family activities or simply a peaceful walk in nature.
Tell me what you love, and I adjust the route accordingly.

What does a private tour cost?

There are no fixed prices on my private tours as it depends on several conditions. These are:

  • How many participants you are
  • How many hours you want the tour to last
  • Whether you will like refreshments or catering
  • Whether you have particular wishes for the content of the tour which I need to spend extra time preparing
  • Whether you need transport

When we have talked or written together about your private tour, I will return as soon as possible with a written offer, in which I describe the tour and its price.

How long is the tour, and how difficult is the terrain?

Most guests choose between:
• The short UNESCO tour — 1 to 1.5 hours
• The Hike, Highlights & Hygge tour — half day
• Custom hikes — 1 to 8 hours

The terrain is generally easy to moderate. Paths can be uneven in some areas, but no special skills are required. I adapt the pace and route to your needs.

How many persons can participate?

It is important to me that I have a good contact with each participant and everyone can hear what I say. I can therefore have a maximum of 30 people on the tour or hike.

Typically the private tours are for a few people – for instance couples or families.

Is the tour suitable for children and families?

Yes — absolutely.
Families love the fossil hunting option, and children often enjoy hearing about dinosaurs, the asteroid impact and the secrets hidden inside the fish clay layer.
I adjust explanations and pace to make it fun and meaningful for all ages.

How do we pay?

When accepting the written offer Klintetours will email you an invoice which can be paid as a bank transfer or you can pay by Paypal.

How do we get to Stevns Klint?

Stevns Klint is easy to reach.

go to Stevns on a day trip on Zealand1 hour by car

From Copenhagen it takes one hour by car, which makes it a perfect day trip from Copenhagen.

1,5 hour by train

If you wish to use public transportation, it takes about 1,5 hour from Copenhagen central station to Rødvig. I can help you by sending you a timetable for the trains. I recommend you to buy the City Pass x-large ticket for the public transportation, since it covers all trains and busses, you will need for your day trip at Sealand.

Click here to read more about the City Pass

If we have a tour that starts at Højerup, I help you out with the transportation from Rødvig to Højerup.

Can we collect fossils? Is it allowed?

Yes — you can collect small fossils in designated areas of Stevns Klint, and I will guide you so we protect the World Heritage Site while exploring it.

There are a few simple rules to follow:

  • Never chip into the cliff itself, only into fallen blocks
  • Never disturb the protected fish clay layer
  • At Højerup, tools are not allowed — you may only pick up what lies loose on the beach.

I explain what you may collect, how to do it responsibly, and I help you identify your finds along the way.

What should we wear and bring?

Wear comfortable walking shoes and clothes suitable for the Danish weather (it can change quickly).
Bring water, sunscreen in summer and an extra layer in cooler months.
I provide all necessary information before the tour.

Will the tour be completed regardless of the weather?

The tours are completed even when it is raining. Put on sensible clothes and shoes.

However, trips are canceled when it can be very uncomfortable or dangerous to complete, for example with weather forecasts that report cloudbursts, heavy all-day rain or heavy thunderstorms.

It is Klintetours that assesses whether the trip can be completed in relation to the weather.

If the trip is canceled due to the weather, this will be notified to you as soon as possible and you will get your money back.

What about illness?

Klintetours is a one-woman company, and if the guide Anne Rosell Holt is ill on the day, the trip will be canceled as there are no substitute guides.

What if we have to cancel?

In case of cancellation less than 14 days before the trip: The entire price of the trip is paid with the exception of any meals that have not yet been purchased or that can be canceled.

In case of cancellation more than 15 days before the trip: The price of the trip is refunded with the exception of DKr 300 in processing fees.
